What is science?
The definition is “ the study and knowledge of the physical world and natural laws.” However, even after reading this statement we are unable to really understand the meaning of science. Let’s take a closer look at what science is and why we celebrate science day:
Understanding science is understanding why explosions or experiments work or what we see in nature. You understand a concept deeply, thoroughly and understand different small things about it like particles, gases etc.
That was science. Now, let’s apply this knowledge to other fields, such as history, geography, and literature, to gain a better understanding of our world and its inhabitants.
Now what is science day and why is it celebrated?
In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Government of India to designate 28 February as National Science Day. The Government accepted and declared the day “National Science Day” in 1986. The first National Science Day was celebrated on February 28, 1987.
28th February is celebrated as National Science Day (NSD) in India. NSD is celebrated to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, which led to Sir C.V. Raman winning the Noble Prize.
The Raman Effect – a change in wavelength caused by some of the radiation scattered in a medium. The effect is specific to the molecules that produce it, and so can be used in spectroscopic analysis.
